What is REBA? A 5-minute primer for safety pros
REBA scoring in plain English: what it measures, how the action levels work, and where it sits in your ergonomics program.
REBA — Rapid Entire Body Assessment — is a whole-body posture assessment method developed by Hignett & McAtamney in 2000. It produces a single numeric score from a worker’s observed posture, load, activity, and coupling. The number maps to an action level that tells you how urgently to intervene.
The two-table scoring engine
REBA scores the upper body (trunk + neck + legs) and the lower body (upper arm + lower arm + wrist) separately using lookup tables. The two are combined into a final score that’s adjusted for load weight, coupling quality, and activity type (static, repetitive, or rapid changes).
The action levels you actually care about
| Score | Action Level | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | AL 0 | Negligible — no action needed. |
| 2–3 | AL 1 | Low — change may be needed. |
| 4–7 | AL 2 | Medium — investigate, change soon. |
| 8–10 | AL 3 | High — investigate and implement change. |
| 11+ | AL 4 | Very high — implement change now. |
Where REBA fits in your program
REBA is best for whole-body, dynamic tasks— lifting, palletizing, patient handling, machine operation. For tasks dominated by the arms, shoulders, and neck (assembly, sewing, computer work), reach for RULA instead. For manual lifting specifically, pair REBA with the NIOSH Lifting Equation.
Why peak score matters more than average
A worker who sits in AL2 for 95% of the recording and spikes to AL4 for 5% is still at high risk — the spike is the injury moment. ErgoVision shows you both the peak score (use for documentation and compliance) and the timeline (use to understand when risk happened).
Beyond the score: capturing context
A REBA score without context is just a number. Defensible documentation captures the task, the worker (anonymized), the date, the load, the duration, and the intervention you took. That’s why ErgoVision links every assessment to a Job and an optional Worker code, and lets you create an Action item from every high-risk finding.
